Reiki is an energy based healing art used to treat physical, emotional, and energetic imbalances. This practice is based around the understanding that life is supported by an unseen, life-force energy (Ki). When this energy is low, stagnant, or imbalanced, one is likely to become ill. Practitioners use this life force energy channeled through their hands to bring about relaxation and healing to the patient. Reiki healing has been widely known to have positive (sometimes miraculous) effects in treating virtually every known illness and is always beneficial to the patient being treated.

The concept of healing touch has been used in many cultures throughout history. Though the depth of Reiki’s cultural influences is often debated, Reiki was developed in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui, who studied topics like medicine and religion, developed Reiki after a spiritual pilgrimage to Mt. Kurama in the early 1900’s. During this profound experience Dr. Usui connected with Reiki (Universal Life Force) giving him the ability to perform treatments. He later evolved the practice by further developing Reiki healing symbols, hand placements and attunements. The teachings of Dr. Usui have been passed down by renowned Reiki Masters such as Hawayo Takata, Dr Chujiro Hayashi, and William Lee Rand.

A typical Reiki session begins with questions concerning any medical conditions that the client may have. Treatment is performed with clients sitting on a chair or laying on a massage table. The practitioner will scan the client’s body for any dysfunctional energy, cold, heat, or energy blocks. Using a series of techniques which may include Reiki symbols, sounds, and hand placements, practitioners channel Universal Life Force Energy to the client to stimulate the natural healing process of the body. Typical sessions will last 30-90 minutes depending on the needs of the client.

Practitioner Training & Licensure:

Reiki practitioner are not yet regulated by local, state, or national boards. Due to the lack of physical contact (touch) Reiki is not considered a form of massage therefore no licensing is necessary. Levels of credentials and experience may be used to gauge the abilities of a Reiki practitioner.

The average income of a Reiki practitioner can vary greatly depending on skill, experience, and region of practice. Practitioners typically charge between $40- $150 for 1 hour sessions. The price of a Reiki session is often comparable to the average price of a massage therapy session in your area.
